JBL VERTEC® Line Array System Takes Award-Winning Metal Act Iron Maiden Over The Top In Belgrade

2 April, 2009, Frankfurt, Germany

In a high-profile event that demonstrates the continued widespread application of JBL VERTEC® line arrays throughout Europe, full-service concert production company Studio Berar deployed a VERTEC system for Iron Maiden’s performance at the Belgrade Arena in Serbia on February 10. Final event on the European leg, the concert was part of an ongoing 90-show, 38-country world tour in support of Iron Maiden’s latest album, “Somewhere Back In Time.”

One of the most popular heavy metal bands of all time, having sold over 70 million albums since 1975, Iron Maiden’s success is largely built on its powerful and energetic live performances. In fact, just days after their Belgrade performance, the band received a prestigious BRIT Award for “Best British Live Act.” Given Iron Maiden’s reputation as a top-notch live ensemble, Studio Berar needed to provide a sound reinforcement system to match the band’s high-energy presence at the 23,000-seat Belgrade Arena.

To this end, Studio Berar set up a total of 32 VERTEC VT4889 full-size line array elements for the main left and right hangs. An additional 16 VT4889’s were in use for out-fill arrays (eight per side), giving a total of 48 VT4889 boxes in the system. Additionally, Studio Berar utilized JBL’s new V4 DSP presets for the VERTEC arrays. “We have designed control and monitoring aspects for the VERTEC line array system by using Harman’s HiQnet™ System Architect™ software,” explained chief engineer Zoran Matic. “This enables us to operate the system more easily, and also save time while adjusting it.”

Aleksandar Babić of B92 online services, a noted Serbian music critic and concert reviewer, offered that in Belgrade, all concerts in the future will be measured by this one. “This show will be difficult to repeat,” he said. “It was really powerful and fun, and it has set dangerously high standards for all the artists who come to perform in Serbia.”
